Do you use a chain drive opener system? What about a cable garage door system? We have put together information on the different systems to provide a better understanding of what they are and how they work. Garage doors are very important, no matter the type, no matter the style, and no matter the manufacturer. They can offer curb appeal, safety and security. It is important that your garage door works the way it is supposed to, opening and closing smoothly, and this entails working cables, chain systems and of course other components. We have provided information on chain vs. cable garage door systems below! We hope that the information we have put together is useful for you, whether you are shopping around for a new garage door or simply want more information on the different components involved in overall operation. Chain Garage Door Systems Chain drive garage door systems utilize a metal chain in their operation in order to lift the garage door. They tend to be affordable in price and they are accessible, making them popular and widely used. How does the garage door work with a chain system? Metal parts and gears are moved together. Chains for garage door openers tend to have a strong lifting capacity, perhaps stronger than systems such as belt driven opener systems. A chain is linked with a clip that is adjustable and it is driven by a sprocket which is located at the top of the motor. Essentially, a metal chain is utilized to pull and push the garage door along the tracks. Chain drives can be considered more often when it comes to lifting heavier garage doors, such as steel carriage doors. They are trusted when it comes to heavy lifting. They offer both power and support, and prior to belt drive systems and screw drive systems, they were the standard for many years. Chain drive systems are important. You might not often take the time to think about it, but chains are very important for the garage door’s operation. But now you might be wondering – what is a cable system? What do cables refer to in relation to a garage door? Are cables as important as a chain for garage doors? The short answer is, yes, they are a very important component and must be properly maintained or repaired as needed. Garage Door Cables Garage door cables play an important part when it comes to the operation of a garage door. Cables help to raise and lower the garage door and support its weight. They are attached at the bottom of the sides of the garage door to brackets. They work with the springs to open and close the door. When it comes to residential garage doors that are standard-lift, the length of the cable is typically the height of the garage door plus an additional 18 inches. When cables need to be repaired or installed, it is recommended that you call an experienced garage door company. We are proud to be a mobile garage door service that is proficient in cable repair and other relevant services. Did you know torsion spring cables are used to wind up the springs? When a cable is damaged or breaks, it can prevent the garage door from opening and closing. That’s because the cable then can’t unwind the springs. Extension springs, on the other hand, stretch when the door is closing and when the door is opening, they contract. Cables for extension springs connect to the door and are installed on the side. When a cable breaks for an extension spring, it can cause the spring to come off the pulley system. Speaking of cables breaking, we can’t emphasize enough the importance of garage door maintenance and regular inspections. It is important to catch any damage or potential damage as soon as possible, which can prevent problems from worsening. Broken Cables? Due to age and wear and tear, cables can eventually weaken and break. They can also become damaged due to rust. Like any part, they must be taken care of and properly maintained. Replacing them involves unplugging the garage door opener and disengaging it which can be done with the emergency release handle. The garage door should be kept open and held up while the cables are changed. This process will also entail loosening screws on springs and loosening tension from the springs. Again, this is something that we recommend contacting an experienced garage door company for, as replacing or repairing parts for the garage door can be very dangerous if one does not know what they are doing. Other Cables to Note Did you know there are other cables for your garage door? There is a lifting cable. There is a safety cable or retaining cable, used in extension spring systems. There are also emergency release cables. These can be used when you need to open the garage door without the spring system (or manually). Garage doors are very important, no matter the type, no matter the style, and no matter the manufacturer, as previously mentioned. They can offer curb appeal, safety and security. It is important that your garage door functions the way it is supposed to, and this entails working cables, chain systems and of course other components. We are glad that you have taken the time to visit our website and to learn more about cables and chains and their relevance to garage door systems. It is a good idea to understand how the different components that make up your garage door work. There are so many working parts, and you will want to pay attention to all of them. Listening for sounds that are unusual can help you to realize damage is occuring. Visually inspecting different parts can help you to see quickly when something is wrong, so you can call the right person to correct it. Cables and chains are important parts! Finding an unexpected concern like mold or signs of a rodent in the garage can be alarming and upsetting. If you keep the garage door shut all day, other than when pulling your vehicle in and out, then finding something off like signs of a critter can be even more surprising. If you haven’t checked the weather sealant, now just might be the time to do so. Weather sealant is great for many different reasons. Since the sealant can protect from cracks which might let in moisture, cold temperatures, hot temperatures, and even critters, the weather sealant is something needed. What is Weather Sealant? What is weather sealant for a garage door? Is it something that only protects against weather conditions? Does it keep rain water from getting inside? Weather sealant is a reference to a seal that might be made of vinyl or rubber. This seal will be attached to the bottom of a garage door. The rubber or vinyl material will compress when the garage door is shut. This is because the material itself is flexible and with it, there is not a gap between the floor of the garage and the door. When you want things like moisture, mold and even rodents kept out of your garage, weather sealant is important to have. As a matter of fact, weather sealant can even prevent sun rays from coming into the garage. If you live in a place that sees very hot temperatures, this can be important. Over time, the sun can even cause damage to the opener system. You want your garage to be airtight. Weather stripping, as such, can go between the panels for the garage door, as well as on the sides of the door. Options for Weather Sealant for Your Garage Door We are a mobile garage door company that offers weather sealant and other solutions for garage doors. Our goal is to help customers to protect their garage and garage door. We want you to know that as it relates to seals, there is no shortage of options. A strip-style seal might be suitable for you if you have a preference for simplicity and you happen to have a wood garage door. Do you have a metal garage door? Consider a rubber gasket. The product you choose might be relevant to the garage door material that you have. Weather sealant can be put into place as a DIY project but it is always a good idea to have an experienced garage door company do any work relevant to the garage door. It can be challenging when it comes to measurements, different sizes, and different spaces and heights. There are other factors that might impact what weather sealant you look into. Here are a few additional details that you might find beneficial when looking into weather stripping… Threshold Seal Something to consider for your garage door is a threshold seal. What is a threshold seal? This is something which is attached to the floor rather than the door and it can help to keep things you don’t want out of your garage, for instance, rain water and moisture. Perhaps your garage is at a downward angle at the bottom of the driveway. In this case, water could easily pour inside. You might consider weather sealant and threshold seal. Vinyl Weather Stripping On the other hand, if water has been getting into your garage, vinyl weather stripping or rubber weather stripping could be something you find very beneficial. This can be installed into the door. Something to consider is that like other products, replacement might be needed over time. You will find rolls of weather stripping available. Panel Weather Stripping Garage door panel weather stripping can be a great way to protect your garage and the items inside of it. Maintenance for the garage door is really very important when it comes to protecting your garage and keeping unwanted things, like water and moisture, out. Have you heard of V-shaped weather stripping? This is designed to ensure the gaps between door panels are sealed shut. Do you have a wood door, or panels with flat edges? If you do, then this would certainly be an option for you to think about. What about a metal garage door? If this is what you have, then you might not want this kind of weather stripping. Garage doors keep things like water, moisture, rodents and dirt out but this is because they have a seal for protection. Unfortunately, wear and tear occurs over time, and the seals can require replacement. It is important that you have a seal that is in good shape and therefore working to protect the garage door. There are many options when it comes to protecting your garage door and we hope that you have a better idea of what is out there. Having appropriate sealant is important and we hope that the information provided here helps you. Did you know you have options, for instance, you can decide between a sectional garage door or a solid garage door? It is true! Solid Garage Door At one point, solid doors were a bit more common than sectional doors. A solid door is what it sounds like – in essence, it is a slab of material. It could be fiberglass, aluminum or a different material. It can slide up or down, and will slide along a space over the opening of the door. It will be attached to a door jam within the hinge. Once springs are attached, the garage door is ready to use and an opener is set up. In terms of space, solid and sectional garage doors are about the same. But there are key differences between these types of doors. A solid panel door might be hung like many sectional garage doors. It all depends! Solid Garage Door – Pros The solid door might be a great bet for you. Convenience – It can use an existing garage door’s frame and hardware to fit. Different Choices – The sectional door requires matching to look right. But with a solid door, there is just one slab, and there are many options. You might be more limited with another kind of garage door. Cost– Compared to sectional garage doors, solid garage doors are in some cases more affordable. This is due to the parts needed to put them together. There are less parts than are needed with a sectional garage door, too, which is something to note. They use different cables and springs than a sectional door. Installation Is Simple – Installation is a relatively simple process for an experienced garage door company. With less parts involved it is easier to install a solid garage door. The amount of parts involved in a sectional garage door can make the installation a bit more complex. Minimal Maintenance – A solid garage door might require less maintenance than a sectional garage door. A solid garage door might be the perfect choice for you. It all depends on what you are looking for. Keep reading the information provided by us – we are a mobile garage door service proficient in garage door installation. We want to make sure to provide the solution you need, and we aim to keep our rates competitive for garage door installation and our other services. Now, we will discuss sectioned garage doors and the pros to using them! Sectioned Garage Door – Pros Reasonably Priced Repairs – A sectional garage door might be a bit less costly to repair. The reasoning is that if a garage door section becomes damaged in some way, only the section might require replacement or repair. On the other hand, can you imagine if the entire garage door needed replacement or repair? Adequate Insulation – Electric bills can drop due to better insulation with a sectioned versus solid garage door. More Space – This type of garage door might be a good bet for someone who stores a lot of items in their garage. Basically, this involves the ability to park a vehicle or even a trailer closer to the door itself. The way it opens is more conducive to having items closer to the door in comparison to a solid garage door. Safety – Sectional garage doors can be safer in the sense that the sections offer a tight seal. There are no indications of easy entry, in this cases, to someone who might want to try to enter uninvited. Steel guiding and great construction make these garage doors very safe. They are resistant when it comes to forced entry. Cons of a Sectioned Garage Door A sectioned garage door will require upkeep. The installation process can become a bit difficult and more involved than the process of installing a solid garage door. Cons of a Solid Garage Door On the other hand, a solid garage door might lack some of the safety features that a sectional door offers. Repairs might get costly, depending on what is wrong. Finally, in terms of space, there is more offered by a sectioned garage door, as previously mentioned. This is due to the way a solid garage door opens and closes. Once the garage door starts opening, it is important items or possessions including vehicles are not parked too close to the garage door. We hope you find this information to be beneficial to you. Thanks for learning more about these types of doors! Johns Creek Garage Masters Aricle source here: Sectioned Garage Door Vs. Solid Garage Door – Pros and Cons When a decrease in temperature occurs, things might start to go wrong with your garage door. Of course, you need it to work not just so you can get your car in and out of the garage, but for security. What are you supposed to do when the temperatures drop, but your garage door doesn’t work? What if it won’t open or shut? Here, we are going to discuss garage door issues in cold weather. Keep reading to discover more! There are different dilemmas that could be causing your garage door to stick or to otherwise not function the way it is supposed to in the cold. There are certain problems that you just might be able to fix yourself, but in some cases, it is a good idea to turn to a garage door service for assistance. What can happen when the temperature drops outside? Metal can contract You might know that metal contracts in cold weather. What does this mean for your garage door? It can mean that metal pieces and springs do not work the way they are supposed to. If this is an issue you are facing, then you might need to lubricate the springs, rollers, hinges, and other moving components. Grease can harden In colder weather conditions, grease can harden. What can you do? You can try using a silicone-based lubricant and grease solvent to maintain the door. It is important to use lubricant for moving parts. Tracks can become warped or wear can occur. Because of wear and weather conditions, over time, garage door rollers can become worn. Track misalignment can occur, too. In addition, tracks for the garage door might warp. We recommend contacting a garage door service for these issues. Springs can break Most garage doors today use a spring system that works to balance and support the weight of the door. Springs can become damaged, especially during winter months. Weather seal can freeze When water freezes near a garage door that is closed, it can cause the weather stripping to stick to the ground. As a result, the strip peels and insulation is impacted. It is important to wipe away any snow or ice near the door. Protecting the garage door when the temperatures changes is important. You can lubricate the pulleys and bearings; keep parts clean; use a solvent; use a silicone-based lubricant for springs, roller bearings and torsion bar bearings; and keep the area dry. If you have not yet determined why the garage door is not opening or shutting, try disconnecting the opener when the garage door is down. Then, see if you can raise the door on your own without using the remote or button. Is it sticking? Can you see grease? Does the garage door seem to be heavier than it should be? This might point to damaged or broken springs. Whether the garage door is impacted by weather or not, it is important to determine if a part needs to be fixed or replaced. Thanks for visiting us! Roll-up garage doors have tracks that curve from vertical to horizontal; both parts must be aligned. Make sure the door sections are securely hinged. There are two main components to a garage door: the door itself and the opener. In this article, we'll tell you how to make repairs to both things. We'll start with the actual door. Repairing a Garage DoorOverhead garage doors, whether they roll up in sections or swing up in one piece, operate on spring tension. The door moves on metal tracks on the garage walls, and a heavy spring or springs provide the power. In most cases when the door doesn't work easily, repairs are fairly simple. Here are some helpful repair tips: Step 1: Check the metal tracks inside the garage. Look at the mounting brackets that hold the tracks to the walls. If they're loose, tighten the bolts or screws at the brackets. Working inside the garage with the garage door closed, examine the tracks for dents, crimps, or flat spots. If there are any damaged spots, pound them out with a rubber mallet, or with a hammer and a block of scrap wood. If the tracks are badly damaged, they should be replaced. Step 2: Check the tracks with a level to make sure they're properly aligned. Horizontal tracks should slant slightly down toward the back of the garage; with roll-up doors, the vertical sections of track should be exactly plumb. Both tracks must be at the same height on the garage walls. If the tracks are not properly aligned, loosen but do not remove the screws or bolts that hold the mounting brackets, and tap the tracks carefully into position. Recheck the tracks with the level to make sure they're in the right position; then tighten the screws or bolts at the mounting brackets. Step 3: Clean the tracks with concentrated household cleaner to remove dirt and hardened grease. Clean the rollers thoroughly, and wipe both tracks and rollers dry. Step 5: Check for loose hardware, and tighten as needed. On swing-up doors, check the plates where the spring is mounted to be sure the screws are tight, and tighten any loose screws. On roll-up doors, check the hinges that hold the sections of the door together; tighten any loose screws, and replace any damaged hinges. Sagging at one side of the door can often be corrected by servicing the hinges. If a screw hole is enlarged, replace the screw with a longer one of the same diameter, and use a hollow fiber plug, dipped in carpenters' glue, with the new screw. If the wood is cracked at a hinge, remove the hinge and fill the cracks and the screw holes with wood filler. Let the filler dry and then replace the hinge. If possible, move the hinge onto solid wood. ©2006 Publications International, Ltd.Swing-up garage doors move on horizontal tracks. The power spring is mounted on the door frame and hooked to the door. Caution: If a roll-up door has only one torsion spring, at the center of the door, do not try to repair it. The tension is so great that the spring could injure you. For doors with this type of spring, call a professional repair service. ©2006 Publications International, Ltd.On roll-up doors, the spring tension is controlled by a cable on a pulley. To adjust the tension, pull the cable and reknot the end to shorten or lengthen the cable.Sometimes the problem with your garage door can be traced to the opener. In the following section, we'll show you how to replace a garage door opener. Read more at: How to Repair a Garage Door
